Global Built Environment Industry Challenge

01 Governance

There is no globally consistent legislative approach, codes of practice or guidance involving the management of the design phase. This leads to inconsistencies in how the design process is governed which can have long term impacts on people and the environment.

02 Systems

There is no globally consistent method or process for embedding corporate strategies on health, safety, environment, climate change or sustainability matters in projects, at a practical level, during both design and procurement activities. This leads to missed opportunities to positively influence the asset’s whole lifecycle.

03 People

There is no globally consistent understanding on the impact of design decisions on (a) the health and safety of the people who will build, maintain and use the asset and (b) the environment, climate change and sustainability issues. This leads to confusion over what designers can practically do to positively influence successful design outcomes.

What has to change?

A cultural change of improving positive designer behaviour towards sustainable design is required, to deliver projects which benefit both people and the environment, over the asset’s whole lifecycle.

de5ign (pronounced ‘five in design’) is Jacobs’ response to this global industry challenge.
